Description
Jumping on the "close-up springtime plant shot" bandwagon for a little bit. It's like photography candy, we all have to dabble once and a while to get our kicks inShot with a Canon 40D, F1.5/100 on a 50mm prime.

Such rich colours and great DOF
Good sharpness on the insect as well!
It's like eye candy

For now I just say that the flower image is superb, such great amount of detail and super-creamy bokeh! Tasty indeed

I think you guys are really reacting to the extremely shallow DOF. All the same, I'd be happy to answer specific questions to further clarify my technique.

I don't have any issue with the look of the fly so I guess I disagree with the other commenters. If I had to criticize it would be the background, the hues there are leaning to the tawny side of green, a bit too far for my tastes anyhow. And those super dark areas in the background are detracting from the smooth tones seen in the main part of the picture

I'm currently in the market for a nice 50mm lens, any advice?
